Brighten a dark photo

Recover a photo taken indoors, at dusk or in a dim room. The tool lifts the dark areas region by region instead of simply turning up the brightness.

Why not just raise the exposure

Turning up overall brightness on a dark photo lifts everything at once. The lamps and windows that were already bright blow out to white, while the shadows turn a muddy gray. This tool takes a different route. It works on small tiles of the image and spreads out the tones within each one, a technique known as tiled histogram equalization, then blends the tiles smoothly. Dark regions get a bigger lift than bright ones, and highlights are protected.

It is ordinary image arithmetic, not a model. It reveals what the camera recorded in the shadows. It cannot invent detail in areas that were captured as pure black.

The four controls

Each slider previews live on a screen-sized copy.

  • Strength sets the overall tone lift. Start in the middle and adjust until faces and main subjects are clearly visible.
  • Local contrast sets how hard each tile is stretched, through a clip limit. More brings out texture in the shadows; too much looks harsh and can make edges glow.
  • Noise smoothing calms the grain that brightening reveals. It is edge-preserving, so it smooths flat areas while keeping outlines. Push it too far and skin and walls look waxy.
  • Saturation boost restores color, since dark photos often look gray once lifted. Use a light touch.

Getting a believable night photo

A low-light photo should still feel like it was taken in low light. Aim for a result where people and objects are clear but the darkness is not fully erased. Raise Strength until the subject reads, add Local contrast until it has some texture, then add Noise smoothing only as much as the grain demands.

Phone night photos have often been brightened already. On those, a little goes a long way, and Strength in the lower third is usually enough. Older or very dark photos can take more.

If faces look gray or flat after lifting, a small Saturation boost usually brings back natural skin tone. If colors start to look neon, back it off.

Press Apply to process the full-resolution photo and add a version to History. Compare with the original before you export.

Pairing with other edits

Indoor light is often yellow or orange. After brightening, Auto colour correction can remove that cast. If the photo is soft, sharpen at the end with Photo sharpener and keep its Threshold up, so you do not sharpen the noise you just smoothed.

Keep the original close with Hold to compare. After a few minutes of editing, your eye adjusts to the brighter version and becomes a poor judge of how far you have gone.

What it will not do

  • It cannot recover detail in areas captured as pure black.
  • Brightening reveals noise; heavy smoothing can make skin and surfaces look waxy.
  • High Local contrast can make edges look harsh or slightly glowing.
  • It is a conventional edit and does not recognize faces or objects.

Devices and downloads

No download — ordinary image arithmetic. With no model involved, WebGPU and WebAssembly do not come into it. The preview runs on a screen-sized copy, and Apply processes the full-resolution photo in this tab.

Step by step

  1. Open a dark photo. Drop, paste or choose the underexposed image.
  2. Set Strength. Lift until the main subject is clearly visible.
  3. Balance texture and grain. Add Local contrast, then Noise smoothing as needed.
  4. Restore color and apply. Add a little Saturation boost, apply, compare and export.

Questions about low-light enhancer

Why do my brightened photos look grainy?

Dark photos carry noise that brightening makes visible. Raise Noise smoothing gradually, stopping before skin and walls start to look waxy.

Will this keep lamps and windows from turning white?

Highlights are protected, and the lift is strongest in dark regions. Areas that were already pure white in the original stay white.

How much should I brighten a phone's night-mode photo?

Less than you might think. Night-mode shots are usually brightened already, so keep Strength in the lower third.

Can it bring out detail in completely black shadows?

No. It can only spread out tones that were recorded. Areas captured as pure black have nothing left to reveal.
